Tournament
Take part in Newton Math Tournament contests online.
Rounds
NMT contests can include several different rounds, each testing a different style of mathematical thinking.
The 2026 Newton Math Tournament includes two main divisions, an Oracle Round, and an Estimation Round.
Students may take either Division 1 or Division 2, but not both. Division 1 is the more challenging division, while Division 2 is more accessible. If you are unsure which division to choose, we recommend Division 2.
Division 1
Division 1 is the more challenging of NMT's two main divisions. It is best for students with stronger contest-math experience who are looking for harder and less routine problems.
Division 2
Division 2 is the more accessible division. It is best for students newer to math competitions or those looking for a moderate challenge.
Oracle Round
Discover the hidden mathematical rule behind each machine, then use it to find a new output.
You might notice the rule is 2n + 1, so an input of 10 would give 21.
Estimation Round
Use mathematical reasoning and sensible assumptions to make your best numerical estimate. Exact answers are not required. Each problem is worth up to 20 points, and estimates earn more points the closer they are to the true value.
Problems are designed so that a strong approximation can be found without knowing every exact value.
Rules
Contest rules
Work independently and enter only your own answers. Your responses save automatically while you work, and you may move between problems and change your answers until you submit.
Once a round is submitted, your answers are final and cannot be changed. Students must also follow the NMT Honor Code and any instructions shown for a particular round.
Prizes
Prizes are awarded separately for Division 1, Division 2, Oracle Round, and Estimation Round.
Participation drawings
Every participant who completes at least one NMT round is eligible.
Students may earn rankings and recognition in multiple rounds. Each participant may receive at most one prize of each sponsor type. If a participant qualifies for the same prize more than once, the additional prize passes to the next highest-ranked eligible student in that round.
